Malmo to Ystad – 55 miles.

Yesterday was sunny then dull. Today turned out the opposite.

I didn’t try to get an early start….it just happens. I wake up before 7am, have breakfast and I’m riding by 7.45am. It suits me fine.

I have been a little surprised about how quiet the city is on a Saturday morning. In the UK there would already be a lot of people and traffic around.

As I left Malmo I got a sight of something that is very Swedish….

I have a Swedish friend in the cycle club who works in the UK for IKEA. He has previously worked here.

Here is a little song by the Lancashire Hotpots about IKEA. If you only read this on email you will probably need to go to the actual blog website to get the song. It’s a good one.

The Lancashire Hotpots have other classics like ‘Chippy Tea’, ‘Keys Wallet Phone’ and ‘He’s turned EMO’. Give them a try.

It was a lovely cycling day….very flat, no rush, and only a slight breeze.

I didn’t expect much of the route but there was plenty to stop and see.

I stopped for a coffee at the railway station at Trelleborg. It’s quite a popular ferry harbour from Germany.

No sign of sun yet! But…it will come.

I saw the lighthouse at the southernmost point of Sweden.

It’s a place called Smygehamn. The lighthouse was open so, of course, I went to the top.

No flashing thank you.
Told you it would be sunny.
The beach was a little tempting for a dip.
My reward for arriving at Ystad. It’s a lovely place.

I have gone upmarket with the hotel. I was told it’s the oldest hotel in Sweden.

The breakfast room!

The price was very good for the quality of the hotel. Needless to say I will not be dining in tonight.

I have found somewhere for traditional Swedish meatballs.

Better than IKEA meatballs!

The restaurant is called Store Thor! Which made me realise that I haven’t mentioned the heroic God of Nordic mythology. I got a knife and fork and a hammer for my meal!! Not really! The meal was very tasty. The berries are lingonberries, which taste somewhere between a cranberry and a redcurrant, or so I’m told! Very scrumptious.

I’ve got another little surprise for you tomorrow. I’m nipping back to Denmark, but just for the morning?

Please spend the rest of the evening listening to the Lancashire Hotpots.

Sitting here with Lorraine in stitches listening to the words of I fear ikea – it’s all true and I’ve been there – in fact one time I had to drive home from ikea in Nottingham without lorry and Rosie cos we couldn’t all fit in the car with the boxes then go back and pick them up!!!
Off to Fiji next week with the family – just found out it’s not an island – it’s about 200 islands!!

Glad you were amused. It is very true.
Have a great trip to Fiji. It will probably feel surreal to go to a place you probably never thought you would visit. Fantastic. All the best Richie.

Meant to say I picked this book up in a secondhand shop here – hadn’t heard of him or the book or radio 4 series. He’s not related is he?!!

Just picked up a secondhand book here called fat man on a Roman road by Tom Vernon
Apparently it was a radio 4 series in the 80s
    Is he a relative?!!
He cycled from Topsham to Edinburgh via Lincoln!
I’m off cycling now – sunny but cold and very gusty

No I don’t think so. I am very good at claiming relatives when it suits me! Enjoy your ride.
