Trelleborg to Höllviken – 31 miles.

I have noticed in most towns I have passed through some political parties have had stalls in the streets and people canvassing the public. Yesterday I passed some public buildings that had some activity going on, I did wonder if they were Polling Stations for an election. Today I read that indeed it was a Swedish General Election. The results haven’t yet been declared….it is believed to be close and it is a little more complicated because there are several parties and it is usually either a left or centre coalition of parties that wins.

I am holding my own election today! I need to decide whether to cast my vote for Sweden or Denmark. Difficult choice! I will notify you of the result at the end of the blog post.

My elder brother is trying to convince me to eat some ‘surstromming’ which is Swedish pickled herring. I can’t say that I have seen any on the menus or in shops.

It is a pickled herring. It looks innocuous but I googled it and this is what it said about the taste!

“Surströmming has a famously intense, putrid smell often described as a mix of rotten eggs, rancid butter, vinegar, and raw sewage”. I don’t think I’ll be giving it a go!

I had another peaceful Monday. I only had 30 miles to do and all day to do it. I cycled slowly….I should try it more often.

I found this very nice beach and realised that there was something I hadn’t done!
I had a paddle in the Baltic….I’m not brave enough to have a swim (I didn’t have my swimmers with me! That’s my excuse).

Next I had to have ‘Fika and Kaka’, I’m not sure it sounds too nice either but it means, coffee time and cake! I passed a bakery cafe that had a sign outside for ‘Apple Bomb’. I wanted one….

A whole apple with marzipan and cinnamon wrapped in the pastry…and a lot of cream. Heart attack on a plate.

I cycled onto a peninsula separated from the mainland by a canal. It was a smart suburb of Malmo and it included the villages of Skåne and Falsterbo. Whilst not cute the villages looked ‘well to do’. It would be a great place to live, close to lovely sandy beaches and harbours.

Falsterbo lighthouse.
Falsterbo church.

I tootled around and had plenty of time to sit and enjoy the peace. Maybe if I continue sitting in ‘peace’ I may qualify for the Nobel Peace Prize! After all Alfred Nobel was Swedish.

Where better for a quiet sit.

My accommodation was a chalet in someone’s back garden.

Very spacious….with…
I didn’t go in. I think it was still rather cold.

One more cycling day tomorrow and that is another short hop back to Malmo.

I nearly forgot to cast my vote. It’s a tricky one but I’m plumping for Denmark over Sweden. They are very similar but the small towns and villages of Denmark have so many old thatched and timbered buildings. Denmark wins on fairytales and Sweden wins on pop music and tennis players! Otherwise the cakes and cycle paths are equally superb.

Oh and it turns out that the Social Democrats coalition narrowly won the actual election.
