Helsingborg to Malmo – 45 miles.

As I’m cycling I’m trying to figure out the differences between Denmark and Sweden. I suspect the differences are fairly small. The language is very similar but still enough to make me very unsure about the names of things. The currency is different with a different exchange rate. Apparently, the cost of living is less in Sweden….that’s good. I will still have to work out anything else….I’m sure there will be other things too.

I woke up and got cracking. I thought it was going smoothly as I set off but the bike felt a bit sluggish and it had a rubbing noise coming from the front wheel. Oh dear….I remembered that I fastened it in a bike rack yesterday and when I came back it was leaning over with some weight pressing on the front wheel in the rack!

I checked and saw the front disc brake ring was not running true!

I definitely thought about it.

I had already gone 10 miles though so I looked up the cycle shop in the next town of Landskrone. I was ready waiting as they opened up at 10am. The man did the job straight away. A new disc and new pads were fitted pretty damn quick! Great service and I was back on the road.

I looked around Landskrone citadel too.

Quite a place.

It had been a fortress, prison, hospital and refugee camp. The weather was superb.

My destination was Malmo. I was about 12 miles away when I noticed….

You wouldn’t see this in the UK. People cycling to catch the bus! That’s a lot of bikes.
I got my first (distant) view of the Oresund Bridge to Copenhagen.

I arrived in Malmo by 1pm and got straight in my room and quickly back out to explore. I chatted to a family from Morecambe as they checked out of the hotel. I can tell the accents!

The Stortorget, main square with Radhus in the background.
Nice old buildings but overall the city is quite tastefully modern.

The Malmohus is the old castle but it didn’t seem too old….or at least not much of it looked very old.

It was in a very pleasant Slottgarten.
I had been following signs to Sydkustleden all day. I thought it was a place at the end of the route. It actually means South Coast Trail! It was only when I saw this sign with it in both directions that I twigged something was wrong.
This is the Twisted Torso, tallest building in Malmo.

I couldn’t resist going up to the top.

There was a bar at the top. The barman treated me as if I was a regular. He said I’d done well to get in as they were booked for 60 people this evening. I was obviously early because I was first.

I had a good walk back through the city. I arrive on a Friday thinking there will be a busy nightlife in the city….but not when I go to bed so early. The nightlife hasn’t even got warm.

I have booked the rest of my cycling journey for 4 more nights before I hit Copenhagen.

Nearly there but I’m not ready for riding back yet. I have a few more miles to cover.
