Fredesborg to Helsingor – 12 miles.

My hotel last night was rather posh for me but I am worth it!

This morning I nipped out for a bike ride around the gardens of the Fredesborg Slot.

The Slot was guarded by soldiers in bearskin hats.

I checked out the gardens at the back…

Very nice too. Until a gardener shouted at me to stop cycling!

I’ve got a track record of riding my bike in the grounds of Stately Homes when I shouldn’t. I wouldn’t mind but I was the only person in the gardens and riding slowly on proper paths. I slowly cycled away.

I had a short ride to Helsingor. It was an easy route to the coast and then north to the small city in the north east corner of Zealand.

In English we know the city as Elsinore which was the location of Shakespeare’s ‘Hamlet’. Can you remember that from your English Lit at school?

The castle in the city is called Kronborg, it is stunning.

I arrived pretty early and I was allowed straight into my hotel room….

Hotel Hamlet sounds cheesy and doesn’t look too grand but it is perfectly good for me. They don’t sell cigars either!

The man on reception was chatty and interesting and whilst I was in my room the hotel window cleaner came to do the windows. Not too interesting I hear you think….but we had a very deep and meaningful conversation about the state of the world, globalism, Mr Trump and the impending disaster of AI. He was really interesting. When I review the hotel I will make a special mention of the very clean windows.

I went out to check out the city and the Slot. I loved what I saw.

Kronborg Slot.

It is another royal palace that is very large and very grand. The interiors had been ripped out whilst the place was used as a barracks so it didn’t have quite so grand interiors but it was still fab.

The internal courtyard.
Holger Dansk. Statue of a fabled Danish warrior, in the cellars.
Prince Hamlet was in residence.
This Old Master was hanging on the wall too.

To complete the sequence….

Alas poor Yorick, I knew him well!

Hamlet was a purely fictional Prince of Denmark. He must have been fictional because since 1600 all Danish kings have either been Christian or Frederik.

This is Hercules fighting the Hydra!

I spent a few hours around the Slot and walking around the waterfront too. It was a pure pleasure.

My lunch involved a smorgasbrod, open sandwich with egg and prawns. Simple but effective.

I visited a couple of churches in the centre and walked the main streets. It was a pretty old town either many worthy buildings.

I called into the Kulturhus and asked if there were any performances in the city tonight….and I ended up booking a ticket to see ‘Willow Hill’ an American Country singer. Could be interesting? I may be out after dark tonight for the first time.

I will have to report in tomorrow’s blog.

But where will I be when I send that blog…. ‘That is the question’!
