Kerteminde to Saeby – 35 miles cycling + a train from Fyn to Zealand.

What a beautiful day it has been. Still windy but lovely and sunny all day.

This proverbial Will o’the Wisp has been flitting around hither and thither trying to find the elusive soul of Denmark! Well, not quite.

I started well with probably the best breakfast so far.

I got to attack it first! I swiped a bacon buttie and a slice of pecan pie for later.

My first destination of the day was the small city of Nyborg (or Newcastle to the English). It was very quiet at 9am when I arrived but all the better for that.

The slot is getting refreshed but it’s looking pretty good in the sun.

I walked the ramparts and then down to the harbour.

The water tower is in the background.
The city felt more Danish than the places I have previously seen. It’s difficult to say why. Quite Scandinavian I think.

I spent quite a while in the Old Mayors House which is a museum. Really very interesting….

I had morning coffee in the courtyard. I was the only museum customer for at least an hour.

I then went to catch the train to the island of Zealand. Cycling over the long bridge is not allowed!

It’s always a little interesting taking a bike on a train especially with panniers.

It all went smoothly. The station platform had a lift so I didn’t need to carry the bike up a load of stairs. The train journey only took 10 minutes.

I hopped off the train and jumped onto the bike to my next target. It was a UNESCO World Heritage Site at Trelleborg….a Viking Fortress this time.

The fortress is now a grassy circle with the shapes of the Viking Long Houses shown on the ground. It’s better than the picture. It would have been a big place.

The exhibition was interesting and again in English. There wasn’t much mentioned about ‘raping and pillaging’. I think the Danes have been very selective with the story!

The Fort was built by King Harald Bluetooth (I’m not making it up!) in around 950AD. His son was Sven Forkbeard and his grandson was King Cnut (or Canute) who ruled England as well as Denmark, parts of Germany, Norway and Sweden. Harald was certainly well ‘connected’!

There was also a full size Long House replica.

Very impressive.
There had to be a photo of me with some weapons. They didn’t have any helmets for me!

I then completed my journey to my rural accommodation. But first….

I needed to send a message to my darling wife….what was her name again, was it Janice Forktongue!

I could be in trouble.

The place I am staying is quite rural near a lake called Tisso. It is a modern house that is very large but it is full of heritage decor! The photos will show it better than I can describe.

My bedroom.

The bed feels a bit dodgy. The owner is away and a friend is staying to look after guests. I have access to all rooms so it’s difficult to decide where to go. The garden and views are gorgeous and I am enjoying a very pleasant sunset. It’s amazing where I end up.

This Will o’the Wisp has certainly darted around today and seen some sights. How exciting!

I have been trying to plan the remaining days I have before I am scheduled for Copenhagen. Staying pretty rural and coastal tomorrow.
