Faaborg to Odense – 32 miles.
It was a rainy day! There was no dodging showers by hiding under trees today. I had to just get on and ride.
Egeskov Castle was on my route. It hadn’t opened by the time I passed it. I wasn’t going to visit anyway because it was £30 to go in.
I couldn’t get a proper view as I passed but it is a grand place. Here’s a picture off the internet…

I called in to a bakery for a Napoleon’s Hat…

I got to Odense before lunchtime.
I felt disappointed that it wasn’t the birth place of Gerry Anderson of the Thunderbirds programs. It turn out that it was the birth place of Hans Christian Andersen. What a surprise. No Scott, Virgil, Gordon or Brains!
I made the best of a bad job and visited the Hans Christian Andersen Haus.

It was very interesting. Lots of information, well communicated and displayed. He was a very interesting man who came from a poor background.
He wrote his fairytales, poems, novels, travelogues and autobiographies. He was quite an artist too.

The Ugly Duckling story is quite an allegory of his life.

The city was pleasant if you could see past the rain.

The main church is St Cnut’s. He was King Cnut the second and was killed in Odense in 1080…

He was related to King Canute of England, Norway and Denmark who tried to turn the tide back. I told you we were all Danish.

My hotel is in the centre and I look forward to a breakfast here tomorrow morning. I am hopeful of better weather to come.
