Tuesday 3d September 2024. Dementia Month.

Hlinsko to Kutna Hora – 84km.

I need to quickly mention Dementia Month before I forget or was it a week, or was it a Day. I can’t quite remember.

On the road early again. Today was probably the day I thought would be toughest of the whole trip. It is a long hilly day after two previous hilly days. It was lovely scenery again to compensate for the hills in the first 50km. However, the graft was definitely worth while when I arrived at my destination.

I was tempted to have a dip.

I needed a brake disc repair part way because the brakes started squealing badly when I descended at speed. That’s not so bad because I had spares and know how to fit them.

Typical scenery enroute.

I stopped at 11am for a coffee at a kiosk and I was fairly satisfied with my kava lungo (hot) until some workmen came over and ordered goulash and bread. I couldn’t resist having it myself. I absolutely needed the sustenance.

It was delicious. Potato lumps with spicy sausage and pork cheek, in a paprika sauce. I’d already scoffed most of it. I didn’t want to look mamby pamby in front of the workmen, so I had to take the photo after they had finished.

There was only one town of any prettiness.

Caslav main square and church tower.

I knew that Kutna Hora had a nice Catherdral but I was blown away when I arrived. It’s amazing that a place that has never been in my consciousness can be sooo good. What I don’t know constantly amazes me! It doesn’t seem to surprise anyone else! Here are some photos.

First sight!
Gothic Stone Fountain.
Just one corner of the Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art. Lovely building but I gave the art a miss.
Art Gallery on the right with St Barbara’s Cathedral ahead.
It’s difficult to find the best angle for a photo of this UNESCO Cathedral. This photo is taken from the balcony of my apartment!! Amazing accommodation. I love a flying buttress!

I was a very distinctive Cathedral with the three triangular peaks and the number of flying buttresses. Very beautiful inside too. You could climb to the higher level and see into the amazing organ.

The town has grand buildings all over. An Italian Court Palace and St Jakobs Church would stand out in its own right….and the Three Kings House….

Depicted are three Kings, two are Wenceslas’s.

It turns out that Kutna Hora is twinned with many towns but one of them is Stamford in England. Janice and I have great memories of Stamford but I was surprised to read that they thought it was in the North West of England. Perhaps East Midlands would be more accurate.

After showering and going out again. My mind turned again to food and drink.

Not a bad view.
I’ll let you guess what this is.

My night time view.

    My guess is ;

pork or steak suet pudding on a bed of beetroot and caramelised curly onions – ish.
what a fabulous tour and lovely weather you’re having Richard ,never heard of most if not all these places, really interesting to see and how very quiet and unspoilt. Our Bron was particularly interested in Brno – wonder why?

Happy travels and thanks for sharing your trip with us xxx

I would echo Yvonne’s comments, superb photos of St Barbara’s Cathedral. I must admit I hadn’t heard of her before but will investigate! By the end of this tour you could qualify as a reputable bike mechanic. A second career perhaps?
