Does the title ring any bells for those readers over 50? I will reveal all at the end of this blog!

What a day it turned out to be. We thought we had a plan, changed it and changed it again.

All the plans involved travelling south through the San Bernardino Pass tunnel in Switzerland and into Italy. The ‘ciao’ at the end of yesterday’s blog probably gave you a clue.

View from a viewpoint at San Bernardino. You can see the weather wasn’t being helpful.

We tried to find a glimmer of improvement in the weather but it wasn’t easy.

We did get some great views of the mountains as we travelled but we also got some very heavy rain. The driving was ok because the Swiss roads and tunnels were immaculate.

There were plenty of good waterfalls in full flow.

We crossed the border into Italy and noticed an immediate difference. The roads surfaces were awful in comparison. The motorways and the ordinary roads. The van suspension was certainly given a good test. To add insult to injury we had to start paying tolls!!

We headed for a town called Magenta near Milan. We passed a free parking place for motor homes but it looked noisy and cramped and moved on.

We did some shopping and found all prices much cheaper than Switzerland, so quickly forgave the quality of the roads.

We moved to a small rural site which was very rural and had no facilities for €30 so we moved on again.

This situation can be a motorhoming reality!

Jan and I consulted the ‘park4night’ app again and deduced that near Milan may not be the most scenic part of Italy.

Another plan was hatched. We needed to do some real laundry and a proper campsite was needed for a couple of nights.

We headed west and found a town with a familiar name in the Piedmont region. It makes a sweet sparkling wine that was popular long before we’d heard of Prosecco. The wine name has two words and it went a bit out of fashion. The actual town we are staying at only has the first word as its title. If you guess it wrong it may make you feel sick!

We haven’t visited the town yet. The photos and update will come in the blog tomorrow.

One thing we did find was….

….sunshine! It probably won’t last tomorrow so the beach volleyball court may not get used by us!!

I have also just been informed by my right hand person that the town is also famous for making Martini. That brings back the memories of adverts of many years ago. The title was the song of Martini in adverts of the 1970’s and would be very familiar to anyone who was around in that era.

As I say, some proper photos will follow tomorrow when we get into the town centre.
