Interesting facts about Stamford:-

  • The Roman road ‘Ermine Street’ ran through the town as did The Great North Road on the route between London and York and became a stopping point for various monarchs including Henry VIII, Elizabeth I and Charles I.
  • The river Welland runs through the town.
  • It is the southernmost tip of Lincolnshire and has a population around 20,000.
  • Burghley House is a grand palace built on the outskirts of the town. It was built for William Cecil who became Lord Burghley as the First Minister for Elizabeth I. It hosts a major three day horse event each year.
  • Stamford has over 600 listed buidings and its stone built town centre is considered to be the ‘Cotswolds without the Crowds’.
  • It was used as a film location for Middlemarch, Pride and Prejudice, The Crown, Bleak House and The Da Vinci Code.
  • It is closely connected to the smallest English county of Rutland and the largest reservoir which is Rutland Water.

We are looking forward to enjoying the town and surrounding area.

It has an added advantage over my current home of Kendal….it is pretty flat, so good for cycling!
