Saturday 21st September 2024. Make Your Bed Day….again!
Braunschweig to Hannover – 65km+
I was scathing with my review of Mr Surly Receptionist at my Magdeburg accommodation. The receptionist may be looking for a new job as I type! I am normally ‘Mr Nice’ doing reviews and give places some leeway but he pushed me too far.
Mrs Lovely Receptionist at Braunschweig was again superb this morning. Good breakfast, all prepared by her and she even suggested that I make a sandwich for the journey….I always do but it was nice to hear her suggest it.
On the road with glorious sunshine again. A shorter flatter day in prospect.

I will jump straight to Hannover. There was plenty to see. I got to the centre easily on a dedicated cycle route. This is what confronted me….

I thought that this might be the major sight of the City Centre. I didn’t want to look too much more because I have two nights here and I didn’t want to see everything in one day. I called at the Tourist Info for advice. I decided to go to Herrenhauser Garten today as it was a little out of town.
I asked in the title if you had heard of anyone from Hannover. I bet I got a blank response but….you didn’t think of the British Royal Family did you! Kings George I, II and III all came from here and their house was Herrenhauser Schloss.

The Garten needed a few photos to do it justice. The Schloss wasn’t open to the public but looked pretty good to me. Whilst walking in the garden I heard a band playing and sought it out. The band were not a band but an orchestra, they were having a little practice before the actual performance at 3.30pm. It was free and I took a seat in the shade and waited.

Another son of Hannover you may not have heard of but know of his achievement is….

I went looking for my ‘Jugendherbe’ Hostel and got checked in and made my bed…hospital corners and everything. In the evening I set off for a walk.

I could see a the Neue Rathaus in the distance and decided I would walk there and back.

I came back via Marschsee, a long lake south of the city centre.

I hope I haven’t done too much today. I didn’t go into the Altstadt, so hope there plenty left to see tomorrow.
The link between Hannover and our Royal Family from 1714 is interesting and almost forgotten now by the British public. George III was the first of the George’s who actually spoke English as a first language, he was on the throne when we won at Waterloo and in later life he was considered to be ‘mad’ with an unspecified mental illness.
Lesson over….time to check out that bed!
