Saturday 14th October 2023. Aubagne, Marseille.
Today we were putting the Marseille travel plan into operation. Down to Aubagne station for the 10.47am train into Gare St Charles and then a day of sightseeing and an evening of rugby watching. As normal our travel back to the campsite was our biggest concern.
We were wowed by Marseille Vieux Port.

The Rugby Village was at the port area too but our first visit was to the Basilique Notre Dame de la Garde, which is on a hill that dominates the city.

We have been tipped off that their would be a ‘flash’ Welsh choir in Place de Charles de Gaule. So, we sat in a restaurant in the square and waited for the Welsh to gather.

We spent the afternoon walking around the south side of the old port and enjoyed amazing views.

Back into the city and we settled down in a bar to watch the Wales v Argentina game. The majority of the Welsh and Argentinian fans had left for the stadium but it was still full of a mixture of fans. Wales, sadly, we’re beaten. They started well but faded in the second half. We left with five minutes left to get to the station and I watched the Ireland v New Zealand match at a bar in Aubagne. That was memorable too. The match was the match of the tournament so far! I watched it with a couple of Argentine fans from Buenos Aires….

Janice headed back to the van to leave me to it. The match was really close but Ireland lost 24-28. It was gripping to the very end. It leaves England to fly the flag tomorrow.
England need to find some of the Bread of Heaven to boost their chances and to fuel their ‘Sweet Chariots’.
