Saturday 7th October 2023. Lyon.

What’s the difference between Janice and Vladimir Putin? One is a ruthless dictator and the other is the President of Russia! Whoops….actually they have something in common….both have a birthday today!

Happy birthday to you. What a gorgeous girl.

We were in the city and had booked a lunch at a restaurant in the Place de St Jean. It’s perhaps the most beautiful old square of Vieux Lyon.

Snogging a lion in Lyon!

Our meal was full of local specialities. We had the same starter, a lentil and saucisson salad, then the mains were….

Janice had the ‘quenelle’. It is a poached dumpling of pike in a crayfish sauce.
You would never guess what this is in a million years, so I will tell you. It’s called ‘tablier de sapeur’ with a sauce ‘gribiche’. Any wiser? The tablier is beef tripe coated in breadcrumbs and fried and the sauce is egg yolk, mustard and gherkins. Are you salivating? Surprisingly tasty. You wondered why I talk so much ‘tripe’, well now you know why.
We both finished with a praline tart that seems to be a Lyon favourite.

We did a little shopping trip in the city for things for grandchildren and then got on with the serious business of the day….rugby.

We went to an English Bar to watch England v Samoa. England were especially lucky to win and didn’t play well. The bar atmosphere was good with more French supporting Samoa but quite a few English too.

We returned to the van to watch the Ireland v Scotland game and the rugby quality was much better than England. Ireland have a healthy lead though at the time of the blog being written.

It’s about time we moved on tomorrow….and about time I got on my bike again. We will miss Lyon, it has lots to offer, it’s definitely worth a visit and I’m sure there’s plenty we didn’t see.

Happy Birthday Janice ….lots of love and many happy returns.
