Monday 2nd October 2023. Champagne.

Most people save Champagne for special occasions but I give Janice Champagne on a Monday night! Well….not the drink! We are wild camping tonight by the banks of the Rhône in the village of Champagne….but not ‘the’ Champagne of the expensive fizzy wine.

We actually intended to stay a St Pierre Le Boeuf. It’s a pity that the approach to the car park was too tight for the motorhome because I like the idea of staying at St Peter the Beef! Should be good for a steak dinner! Champagne was the second best but it turns out to be a lovely wildcamp by the river.

I had cycled through a few pretty towns and villages.

Chateaubourg.

The towns of Tournon sur Rhône and Tain l’Hermitage are on opposite sides of the river, both are pretty places. Tain is famous for making chocolate and has a Museum where tasting is free. I only found out tonight about the free tasting otherwise I would have gone! They are usually shut on a Monday anyway!

Tain l’Hermitage.

Whilst there I needed my morning coffee and pastry….

I was complimented for my pronunciation of ‘millefeuille’, I think I pronounced it ‘vanilla slice please’!

The towns are joined by a wide footbridge.

Tournon sur Rhône.

My lunch stop was at St Vallier where I ate a prawn sandwich by the river, here….

Janice arrived at Champagne in the van only a couple of minutes before me. I had spotted this place by the river to wildcamp so we drove down to it.

I’m not too sure what the purpose of the tower is other than it could have been a part of a previous bridge. It is possible to climb up….Janice will do it for a million pounds! Anyone got that kind of money?
Janice took the photo just at the moment I was doing my Leonard Rossiter impression! “Oooo Miss Jones”!

Tonight we will be popping a cork and making a toast to our cheap night in Champagne.

We found this poster of the town just to prove that it exists!
