Saturday 23rd September 2023. Forques, near Arles.

We like Arles so much we stayed for a second night….and our wildcamp at Forques is perfect. All we have to do is ride for 5 minutes across the Petit Rhône and the Grand Rhône to get into the historic town.

Forques isn’t too bad either, it’s got a small chateau a pretty church and an arena….probably originally for bull fights?

Small chateau at Forques.

We had a slow morning, had a ride north of Arles and looked around Forques before a trout salad lunch at the van. We had a busy afternoon and evening of sightseeing and rugby watching in Arles.

This is Espace Van Gogh….it was a hospital where Van Gogh sought treatment. It is quite a visitor attraction now.
A little selection of his famous works.
A typical street in Arles. It was lovely to wander around.
The Place de la Republic was a non stop wedding venue. A church on the right and the Hotel de Ville straight ahead we’re hosting back to back ceremonies. We saw a total of four, all very colourful.

We were never far from the Colosseum either. It’s was the 20th biggest in the whole Roman Empire. That’s probably Premier League gladiator fighting! All worthy of a UNESCO title.

We settled down in the Irish Bar to watch the England v Chile match. A local lad enjoyed practicing his English with us and we spoke to a nice Aussie couple who gave us tips about places to visit in Australia on a future trip. England won 71-0. It looked a good result but Chile are probably the weakest team in the tournament. We returned to the van and I went to a Forques bar to watch the Ireland v South Africa game. It was an epic match between two of the top three teams….and Ireland won 13-8.

Back on the bike tomorrow to get to another UNESCO site at Avignon.
